Capella University and American Nurses Association Leadership Institute™ to Bring Together Expert Panel to Define 'Nurse Leader'

MINNEAPOLIS, April 16, 2014--Capella University (www.capella.edu), a regionally accredited online university* and the American Nurses Association Leadership Institute have brought together a panel of expert nursing leaders for a live, virtual event on what it means to be a 'Nurse Leader' through Google Hangouts. The panel will be held on April 24, 2014 at 1 p.m. CDT. This panel will be worth a maximum of 2.0 60-minute contact hours**. The impact of nurses skilled in leadership is felt in many areas, including: improved patient outcomes, lowered cost of care and better health care boardroom decisions. The expert panel will define what 'nurse leader' means for the profession and the health care industry.

Panelists include:

  • Joan Ellis Beglinger, RN, MSN, MBA, FACHE, FAAN., consultant with Tim Porter O'Grady Associates and former vice president for Patient Care / Chief Nursing Officer at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wis.
  • Kim M. Crandall, RN, BSN, CCM vice president of Clinical Operations and Care Coordination, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan
  • Robert Hess, RN, PhD, FAAN founder, Forum for Shared Governance and executive vice president of Global Programming at Gannett Education
  • Nancy Robert, PhD, MBA, BSN, chief product and marketing officer at ANA
  • Rose Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, CNL, FAAN, professor and director of Nursing Leadership Institute at Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing
  • Deidre Walton, JD, MSN, RN, president of NBNA and CEO at Keverdon and Associates
  • Shirley A. Weis, BSN, MM emeritus vice president and chief administrative officer (CAO) at Mayo Clinic

The panel moderator will be Patricia Y. Talbert, PhD, MPH, MS, CPHA, CHES. Talbert is the Healthcare faculty chair at Capella.

"The future of the nursing profession is in a state of transformation," said Talbert. "Creating opportunities for nurses to interact with and learn from top professionals in the field will only continue to advance the profession and align with the 2010 Institute of Medicine Report on the Future of Nursing to increase the number of nurses prepared at the advanced level by 2020."

A new Nurse Leader Grant, up to $5,000 depending on degree level, is also being offered for new students who enroll in select Capella online degree programs by Sept. 8, 2014 and meet other eligibility requirements. The Future of Nursing, an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, recommends that by 2020 the number BSN-educated nurses should increase to 80 percent, and the number of DNPs should double.
