The online university has CACREP accreditation for its Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy programs

MINNEAPOLIS, January 31, 2013 – The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has reaccredited Capella University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy programs through March 31, 2020.

Accreditation by CACREP, which is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), provides recognition that the content and quality of an educational program has been evaluated and meets standards set by the profession.

CACREP accreditation provides students who are researching an educational institution with the following:

  • Recognition that the program has been evaluated and meets or exceeds national standards.
  • Knowledge that graduates have met the majority of prerequisites for credentialing and are ready for entry into professional practice.
  • Understanding that the focus of the program will be on professional counseling, not psychology, education or other helping professions.

"We are committed to providing our learners with the highest quality programs as evidenced by our CACREP accreditation of these three counselor education programs. Our faculty, academic leadership, and support staff work together to help our learners achieve their goals so they can make a difference in the lives of others in their communities," said Anna Hultquist, PhD, LMFT, CFLE, Capella's Dean for the Counseling Programs.

Capella's Clinical Mental Health Counseling program first received CACREP accreditation in 2003, and was followed by the Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy program in 2005 and the School Counseling program in 2009. In January of 2013 the eight-year accreditation of all three programs was granted under CACREP's 2009 standards for the following program areas: Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling; and School Counseling.

As of Sept. 30, 2012, nearly 35,000 students were pursuing an online degree at Capella. The learning and career outcomes of Capella's students and alumni can be found at www.capellaresults.org.
