The American Nurses Association (ANA) partners with Capella University to develop programs for the ANA Leadership Institute

July 12, 2013

Programs to utilize advanced technology combined with expert faculty, innovation and evidence-based practice

MINNEAPOLIS, July 12, 2013 – Capella University (www.capella.edu) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) have signed an agreement to develop programs and offerings for the ANA Leadership Institute to advance the preparation and education of nurse leaders. The ANA has signed a similar agreement with The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Capella University is an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs. As of March 31, 2013, more than 36,000 students were pursuing an online degree at Capella. The learning and career outcomes of Capella's students and alumni can be found at www.capellaresults.org.

The ANA Leadership Institute offers programs across three leadership tracks: Emerging Leaders, Developing Leaders and Advanced Leaders. Drawing on the expertise of key leaders from the ANA and the nursing industry, Capella will work with the ANA to develop the curriculum for the emerging and developing leader tracks, along with powering the learning platform for those tracks. In addition, the ANA Leadership Institute is currently offering an on-demand five-part webinar series within the developing leaders track, which is powered by Capella University.

"With these two partner organizations, we are able to build on ANA's rich tradition of excellence through the competency-based approach combined with the technology and online learning platform of Capella University. Along with the faculty reputation and evidence-based instruction of The Ohio State University College of Nursing, this will allow us to enrich the learning experience of programs offered through our ANA Leadership Institute," stated Marla Weston, PhD, RN, FAAN, CEO of the ANA.

The ANA Leadership Institute designs programs to reach the emerging, developing and advanced nurse leader, regardless of past experience or training, to help advance their careers and leadership opportunities to improve the health care system, health care delivery, and to influence the overall health of society.

"Nurses have inherent leadership qualities that, with additional preparation, education, and skills-building experiences, can enhance the overall impact of the profession on the health care system," added Weston.

In addition to in-person advanced instruction provided by a nationally recognized leadership faculty that includes Tim Porter O'Grady, DM, EdD, ScD(h), APRN, FAAN, GCNS-BC, NEA-BC, CWCN, CFCN; Kathy Malloch, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN; Scott Graham, PhD, USAF Lt. Col. (ret.); Bernadette Melnyk; and ANA leaders; the ANA Leadership Institute will offer a large portfolio of online coaching and educational experiences for emerging and developing leaders.

"We are honored that Capella University has been chosen to create, host and maintain a learning ecosystem to support selected ANA Leadership Institute offerings. Outside of Capella's online nursing degree offerings, the ANA Leadership Institute is another way Capella can bring our online learning expertise to nurses across the country in order to support career development and leadership advancement within the nursing profession," stated Scott Kinney, president of Capella University.

"The technological sophistication combined with the experienced faculty will take ANA light years ahead as an organization, as well as the nursing profession, in the current and evolving health care environment," concluded Weston.

New program offerings for emerging, developing and advanced nurse leaders will be available live and online in September. Interested learners can visit www.ana-leadershipinstitute.org for more information and to register for these programs.
