Capella University announces RN-to-BSN/MSN Combined Option

April 29, 2013

The accelerated pathway allows RNs to earn both a BSN and an MSN in just over three years

MINNEAPOLIS, April 29, 2013 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced a new nursing offering, the RN-to-BSN/MSN Combined Option. This accelerated pathway allows RNs to earn both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in just over three years and save $4500 in tuition costs compared to pursuing each degree separately. Capella's BSN and the MSN programs are both accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)**.

"There is a growing trend for registered nurses to advance their education beyond an associate's degree, and some health care institutions are now requiring a BSN," said Capella's director of nursing and health care, Lonnie Wederski, PhD, MSN, MBA, RN. "Capella's new RN-to-BSN/MSN Combined Option is a great choice for associate degree RNs who wish to advance in their career by obtaining a BSN as part of the pathway to an MSN. It speeds their progress toward a master's degree in nursing while giving them a head start on the advanced skills they need to practice nursing in today's increasingly complex health care environment."

Capella's combined option incorporates both the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice and the Essentials of Master's Education for Advanced Practice Nursing established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. To qualify for the combined option, students must enroll in Capella's BSN and after completing 100 quarter credits of bachelor's-level course work, meet the requirements for enrolling in the combined option. The streamlined RN-to-BSN/MSN Combined Option allows 12 master's level credits to be applied to both the BSN and MSN program requirements, saving $4,500 and up to six months time compared to earning each degree separately.
