Master's degree graduate of Capella University voted 2012 Army Military Spouse of Year

May 9, 2012

El Brown, founder of KinderJam®, selected through Military Spouse magazine; also visits White House

MINNEAPOLIS, May 9, 2012 – Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, announced today that El Brown, who earned a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Capella, has been selected 2012 Army Military Spouse of the Year through Military Spouse magazine, and sponsored by Armed Forces Insurance.

Brown is the founder of KinderJam®, an enrichment program for preschoolers that is now offered across the nation and in eight countries. She was nominated for the 2012 Army Military Spouse of the Year competition by parents and others associated with KinderJam.

"KinderJam is the reason I went to Capella," Brown explained. Initially created for the needs of her young son, Brown, a teacher and military spouse, soon began offering the KinderJam program on the military base. Having discovered her life's passion, she wanted to ensure that KinderJam provided a reliable curriculum.

"Capella was the obvious choice for completing my master's," Brown said. Pursuing her degree online meant she could continue her studies regardless of the frequent moves often required of military families. She graduated from Capella in 2011.

Brown said her graduate degree gave her professional credibility. "My master's degree shows that I am serious about my craft—and it opens more doors."

Brown and her husband, Major Ricky Brown, visited the White House in April. The Browns met First Lady Michelle Obama as part of the first anniversary of the Joining Forces initiative, which supports U.S. servicemembers and military families.

As 2012 Army Military Spouse of the Year, Brown is a finalist for Military Spouse magazine's 2012 Military Spouse of the Year. The winner will be announced May 10.

As of March 31, 2012, more than 37,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella. The learning and career outcomes of Capella's students and alumni can be found at www.capellaresults.org
