As president, Dr. Plater will focus on setting the academic agenda for the University, overseeing the development of dynamic educational programs that provide Strayer University students with the academic achievements needed to compete in a complex global economy and identifying top faculty who bring diverse professional and academic perspectives to the classroom.

“Dr. Plater is an academic visionary, who is making access to high-quality, postsecondary education a top priority,” said Charlotte Beason, Ed.D., chairwoman of the Strayer University Board of Trustees, who bestowed the honors during the investiture ceremony. “His experience and commitment to adult learners is an asset to Strayer University as the institution focuses on educating nontraditional students who must balance work, family and school demands while earning their degree.”

Dr. Plater draws from his established career in the private sector and more than 20 years in academic administration. He served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University, where he managed 13 academic departments and five affiliated academic programs. He was also the associate dean of the Graduate School at Brown University and taught the “capstone” business policy and strategic management classes in the MBA program at the University of Florida.

“I am deeply honored to be named 14th president of Strayer University, an institution that is committed to preparing its students to compete in a 21st century global economy, and to receive this honor in the University’s 120th year,” said Dr. Plater. “My mission and that of the University are one and the same – increase access to postsecondary education and create an outstanding learning experience for today’s adult learners to improve their lives, careers and communities.”

Raised by a single parent, Dr. Plater learned firsthand that education can transform lives. He attended inner city schools in Washington, D.C., until the age of 14, at which time he earned a scholarship to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. After graduation, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in American studies from the College of William and Mary.
