The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredits Capella University's MSN and BSN programs

November 29, 2011

The online university is also pursuing CCNE accreditation for its Doctor of Nursing Practice

MINNEAPOLIS, November 29, 2011 – The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education* (CCNE) has accredited Capella University's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) online degree programs. CCNE is a U.S. Secretary of Education-approved accrediting agency that monitors the quality of college-level nursing programs. Capella University is an accredited online university** that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults. As of Sept. 30, 2011, more than 35,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with nearly 80 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs and master's degree programs.

Capella offers five specializations within its MSN program: Nurse Educator, Nurse Educator Bridge, Nursing Leadership and Administration, Diabetes Nursing, and Gerontology Nursing. The online university offers an RN-to-BSN Degree Completion specialization within its BSN program.

"We're pleased to offer our learners these CCNE-accredited nursing programs," said Mary Bemker, DSN, director of Capella's Nursing Department. "Employers look for CCNE accreditation because they know that graduates of CCNE-accredited programs have the tools to succeed in nursing. CCNE-accreditation can also make the process for some national certifications easier because many licensing or certification bodies recognize that graduates of CCNE-accredited programs may meet certain prerequisites for nursing credentials."

In addition, Capella is actively pursuing CCNE accreditation for its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and has a site visit scheduled for spring 2012

About CCNE

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is a nationally recognized accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Secretary of Education. Accreditation by CCNE serves as a statement of good educational practice in the field of nursing. Programs can receive an initial accreditation term of up to five years. CCNE accreditation is intended to accomplish at least five general purposes:

  • To hold nursing programs accountable to the community of interest—the nursing profession, consumers, employers, higher education, students and their families, nurse residents—and to one another by ensuring that these programs have mission statements, goals, and outcomes that are appropriate for programs preparing individuals to enter the field of nursing.
  • To evaluate the success of a nursing program in achieving its mission, goals, and expected outcomes.
  • To assess the extent to which a nursing program meets accreditation standards.
  • To inform the public of the purposes and values of accreditation and to identify nursing programs that meet accreditation standards.
  • To foster continuing improvement in nursing programs—and, thereby, in professional practice.
