Capella University students eligible for Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program

The online university is one of a select group of institutions that have been designated as a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

MINNEAPOLIS, January 7, 2011 – Students of Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, are eligible for the Department of Defense’s 2011 Information Assurance Scholarship Program as a result of Capella being designated as a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Approximately 12 percent of Capella students are affiliated with the military. As of Sept. 30, 2010, more than 38,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with 30 percent enrolled in Capella’s doctoral degree programs, and 48 percent enrolled in Capella’s master’s degree programs.

Students who are selected for the scholarship will receive:

  • Full tuition, books, and expenses for one year.
  • $14,000 stipend ($19,000 for graduate students).
  • Information security internship with the Department of Defense and a professional position with the federal government at the completion of the learner's program.
    Scholarship recipients are required to fulfill a period of service with the Department of Defense. Most internships are located in Washington, D.C.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a Capella University degree program as of March 2011, pursuing a course of study in or related to computer and network security.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 for undergraduate learners, or 3.5 for graduate learners.
  • Not be a current employee of the Department of Defense.
  • Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.

Those interested in applying for the scholarship should fill out the scholarship application on the Department of Defense website at http://cio-nii.defense.gov/sites/iasp2/prospective.html. All required documentation must be sent to Capella at Scholarships_grants@capella.edu no later than Feb. 1, 2011.
