October 18, 2011

The Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) will recognize Minnesota's top technology companies and individuals at the November 3 awards ceremony

MINNEAPOLIS, October 18, 2011 –Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high quality online degree programs for working adults, has been named a finalist for the EduTech Tekne Award by the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) for its Riverbend City simulation. The EduTech Award recognizes the development of technologies and innovations that enhance teaching and learning both in and out of the classroom.

Capella’s cutting-edge crisis simulation, Riverbend City, was created for the School of Public Service Leadership to provide a multidisciplinary experience in an online, asynchronous learning environment. Riverbend City allows participants to step into various public service leadership roles, strengthening the collaboration skills important to managing crisis situations.

“This is a great honor for Capella as an educational technology leader. Being a finalist is motivating for us, and pushes us to continue to innovate,” said Jesse Rosel, Capella’s manager of Course Media. “This project has been something we’ve been working on for a few years, and it’s a great feeling to be recognized for it.”

The 12th Annual Tekne Awards, which will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Thursday, November 3, recognizes Minnesota companies and individuals who have shown superior technology innovation and leadership.

Another finalist for the EduTech Award is the innovative startup company Sophia, a social teaching and learning platform that integrates education with technology that Capella Education Company has invested in.

“I want to congratulate all of the finalists vying for a Tekne Award,” said Margaret Anderson Kelliher, President and CEO of MHTA.  “Entrepreneurship can be exhilarating. We also know it takes a lot of patience and determination.  Minnesota’s has always been known as a place for cutting-edge technologies and the long hours put forth by our finalists is more evidence of that ongoing spirit of innovation.”
